John takes us back to the basics of Christianity, here at the beginning of his first letter. He wants to encourage Christians to remember what their faith is based on, historical facts. He wants to do this because he knows we can so easily get distracted by other things, which causes real problems. Remembering the basics brings us back to things that are known, encouraging us in the process and helping us to stay faithful to all that God has done on our behalf.
